Specialist Training

Study, Education, and Further Training

The term trauma surgery encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, conservative and surgical treatment of injuries and their sequelae, including assessment. Training assistants are trained and supported in these areas.

The minimum duration of training for the specialist in orthopedics and traumatology is 6 years, including:

  • 9 months basic training
  • 36 months specialized basic training (traumatology/orthopedics)
  • 27 months  Specialized focus training (three modules out of six clinical modules and one scientific module are to be chosen)

The basic training can be completed externally before starting the specialized basic training at the Department of Trauma Surgery or through rotation within the Medical University of Vienna. Each semester, trainees are assigned to a specialist within the respective team. The three year specialized basic training, they have at least 6 different direct contacts. Trainees get to know their various areas of expertise and work closely with the trainers. Additionally, each semester includes an assignment to specialized trauma surgery outpatient clinics. This promotes the flexibility of trainees and allows for a deepening of knowledge in specialized areas of trauma surgery. Furthermore, each assistant is assigned a permanent mentor who accompanies them throughout the entire training period.
